The character Saul from the novel Indian Horse was a determined and intelligent person. For an example; when Saul was told that he was too young to play hockey with the older kids he didn’t quit trying and just not play. Instead he offered to clan the ice every morning as a chore, and he also hid a stick in the snow bank and used frozen horse crap as a substitute for a puck. He was determined because when he was put on a hockey team with boys that where all a few years older than him, he didn’t slack off he played his best to push the other boys to play harder, and this made the entire team play better because they didn’t want a kid to be playing better than him. Also, when he played for them he was pushed around a lot (hit dirty and mocked), but that wasn’t enough for him to stop playing his hardest, he still got a hat trick every game.
